Canine Moist Eczema, also known as hot spots, is a serious dog skin condition. It is a result of contained moisture on the skin and bacterial infections and can usually be treated with antibiotics. These hot spots appear as raw patches of skin and can occur anywhere and are easily spread.
The area will be very itching and therefore can quickly turn raw and scabby. Lesions can also occur which are painful and itchy causing the dog to lick and chew the affected areas which may cause the skin to thicken and scar.
Dogs that are wet, dirty and that have a matted coat are more susceptible as it can encourage bacterial growth and cause infection, making it vital that these hot spots are treated and that you groom your dog regularly.
Trimming the fur around the area of the hot spot will allow the skin to breathe and dry out and therefore scab over. It is also important to prevent your dog scratching and licking the area to allow it to heal. The area can be cleaned with an antiseptic spray or specialized shampoo, and then hydrocortisone cream can be applied to prevent itching. A comfy collar is a great way to prevent your dog from licking the area, with minimal distress, especially compared to Elizabethan collars, which most dogs find very stressful. However you must consult your vet to prescribe the appropriate treatment and antibiotics and a hydrocortisone injection may also be given.
Moist eczema is more common in the summer period and as the infection affects the deep layers of the skin it can take a few weeks to heal.
Ticks can be a causal factor of moist eczema, however this is quite rare.
To prevent this skin problem in dogs ensure that you thoroughly dry your dog’s coat after baths or when they go swimming in the lake or sea. Regular grooming helps to prevent the build up of matting, and ensure you keep long haired coats trimmed, especially during the summer months. Dog supplements such as Yumega can also prevent further infections by keeping the skin soft and preventing irritation due to dry and itchy skin.
